How common is fever in meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. Along with fever, symptoms can include a severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, vomiting, confusion or marked sleepiness. In babies and young children, signs may be less typical, such as poor feeding, irritability, a weak cry, or unusual limpness.

A fever does not by itself identify meningitis. The concern comes from the overall illness and neurological symptoms, which can develop quickly and need clinical assessment.

Do not wait at home to see whether a concerning combination of fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, altered behaviour or repeated vomiting settles. Arrange urgent medical assessment. Give the clinician details about when symptoms started, medicines taken, recent infections, and any change in alertness or ability to drink.

Seek emergency help immediately for a fever with confusion, a seizure, difficulty waking, severe headache, a stiff neck, breathing difficulty, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. For an infant, urgent assessment is needed for poor feeding, unusual drowsiness, persistent irritability or a noticeably different response to you.

Ask which findings make meningitis a concern, whether tests are needed straight away, and what should happen while results are pending. If caring for a child, ask how to monitor feeding, urine output and responsiveness after the assessment.
