How common is fatigue in chronic kidney disease?

Reduced kidney function can allow waste products to build up and can affect fluid, mineral, and hormone balance. Chronic kidney disease may also be associated with anaemia, itching, restless sleep, muscle weakness, or low mood. These factors can make ordinary activity feel harder. Fatigue alone cannot identify its cause, and other conditions or medicines can contribute too.

Keep a brief record of when tiredness occurs, how it affects walking or work, sleep quality, appetite, breathlessness, and any new medicines. A clinician may review your kidney blood tests, blood count, iron status, blood pressure, sleep, and mood. Do not start iron, supplements, or herbal products without checking first, because some products are unsuitable when kidney function is reduced. Gentle activity and regular meals may help within your personal limits.

Arrange medical advice if fatigue is new, steadily worsening, or limiting routine activities. Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, marked drowsiness, or very little urine, especially with swelling or vomiting.
