How common is eye discharge in conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin lining of the eye and eyelid. It may be triggered by infection, allergy, or irritation. Discharge may be watery, mucus-like, or thicker, and it can make the eyelashes stick together after sleep. Redness, grittiness, tearing, itching, and eyelid swelling may occur too. Those features cannot reliably establish the cause without considering the full picture.

Wash your hands often and avoid touching or rubbing the eyes. Gently clean discharge from closed eyelids using clean water and a fresh cloth or pad for each eye. Do not share towels, eye makeup, or contact lenses. Pause contact-lens use while there is redness or discharge. A clinician or pharmacist can help determine whether you need a specific treatment and how to use it correctly.

Seek urgent assessment if you have eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, a chemical exposure, or an injury. Arrange prompt medical advice if eyelid swelling is marked, discharge is worsening, symptoms do not improve, or you feel generally unwell. A red painful eye in a contact-lens wearer needs prompt assessment because the cornea may be involved.

Ask what is the likely cause of the conjunctivitis, whether you should avoid work or close contact while symptoms are active, and which changes should trigger a review. Mention recent colds, allergies, contact-lens use, eye injuries, and any drops you have used.
