How common is excessive thirst in chronic kidney disease?

The kidneys help regulate fluid and mineral balance. When kidney function is affected, the body may handle fluid differently, and some people notice a dry mouth or a stronger urge to drink. Thirst can also be influenced by heat, activity, high-salt foods, medicines, high blood glucose, and mouth breathing.

Fluid needs are individual in chronic kidney disease. Some people are advised to adjust their fluid intake because of their kidney function or related health problems. For that reason, a sudden large increase in drinking is not a substitute for personalised advice.

Note when the thirst began, whether you are passing more or less urine, and whether you have swelling, nausea, tiredness, or a dry mouth. Follow any existing fluid plan from your kidney team. If you do not have one, arrange a review rather than making major changes to your usual fluid intake on your own.

Contact a clinician soon for new or increasing thirst, particularly with changes in urination, swelling of the legs or face, or worsening fatigue. Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or inability to keep fluids down.

Ask whether your fluid target should change, whether your medicines may affect thirst, and which symptoms should prompt contact with the kidney team. Bring details of any recent illness, diarrhoea, vomiting, or heat exposure.
