How common is elbow pain in olecranon bursitis?

The olecranon bursa is a small fluid-filled sac over the pointed back of the elbow. Repeated pressure, a knock, prolonged leaning, or inflammation can make it enlarge and become tender. Pain may be worse when the elbow touches a surface or bends fully, while a soft or tense swelling can be more noticeable than pain. Infection or another elbow problem can look similar, so redness, warmth, drainage, or fever deserves medical attention.

Avoid leaning directly on the elbow and protect it from repeated knocks. Keep comfortable movement without forcing the swollen area, and note changes in size, warmth, colour, tenderness, or drainage. A clinician can examine the swelling and decide whether treatment involves protection, medication, drainage, or care for an underlying cause. Do not try to puncture or drain the bursa yourself.

Seek prompt medical care if the elbow becomes hot, red, increasingly swollen, very painful, or starts leaking fluid, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Get urgent help after a significant injury, if the arm cannot move, or if new hand numbness or weakness appears.

Ask whether the swelling is consistent with bursitis, whether infection needs checking, and how to protect the elbow during work or sport. Ask which changes should prompt immediate reassessment and whether movement exercises are appropriate.
