How common is easy bruising in essential thrombocythaemia?

Essential thrombocythaemia is a bone-marrow condition that changes platelet production. Bruising may occur after minor knocks or without a remembered injury, and some people also notice nosebleeds, gum bleeding, headaches, visual symptoms, or tingling. The same condition can increase clotting risk, so the overall symptom pattern and blood results guide care. A bruise by itself does not establish the diagnosis.

Tell your doctor or haematology team about new, frequent, or enlarging bruises and any bleeding. Bring a complete list of medicines, including aspirin, anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory painkillers, and supplements. Do not alter prescribed treatment independently. Protect skin from knocks and ask which activities are suitable while your platelet results are being reviewed.

Seek emergency care for sudden weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a painful swollen limb, a severe headache, vision loss, or bleeding that will not stop. Black stools, blood in vomit, or a rapidly worsening bruise also require urgent assessment.

Ask how your platelet count and platelet function relate to the bruising, whether medicines could be contributing, and which symptoms suggest bleeding or clotting. Clarify when to repeat blood tests and who to contact if bruising changes between appointments.
