How common is easy bruising in childhood cancer?

Children often bruise on shins, knees, and elbows during normal play. More concerning features include bruises in unusual places, bruises with no clear injury, tiny red or purple spots, persistent tiredness, paleness, repeated infections, bone or joint pain, swollen glands, or bleeding from the nose or gums. These signs do not diagnose cancer; they indicate that a clinician should assess the child rather than relying on appearance alone.

Take clear notes about when bruises appeared and whether they are increasing. Photographing them can help show change over time, while keeping the child comfortable and hydrated may help during an illness. Arrange a prompt appointment when bruising is unexplained or occurs with the accompanying symptoms above. Do not delay assessment because the child seems active between episodes.

Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, severe headache, unusual sleepiness, confusion, difficulty breathing, fainting, blood in vomit or stools, or a child who looks very unwell. Fever with marked weakness or a known blood problem also warrants prompt medical advice.
