How common is easy bruising in aplastic anaemia?

Aplastic anaemia affects the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. When platelet production falls, small blood-vessel leaks take longer to seal. This may cause bruising, pinpoint red or purple spots, nosebleeds, or bleeding from the gums. Low red cells can add tiredness and breathlessness, while low white cells may make infections more concerning. The pattern and blood count matter more than one bruise.

Contact the treating team about new or increasing bruises, especially if they occur with bleeding or fever. Use a soft toothbrush, protect the skin from knocks, and avoid activities that could cause injury until you receive personalised advice. Check before taking aspirin, ibuprofen, herbal products, or supplements because some can increase bleeding.

Get urgent medical help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, blood in vomit or urine, black stools, a severe headache, confusion, weakness, breathing difficulty, or a fall involving the head. Fever during known or suspected aplastic anaemia also requires prompt clinical advice because infection risk can be significant.

Ask how your platelet, red-cell, and white-cell results relate to the bruising, which medicines are safe, and what level of bleeding needs emergency care. Ask whether you need activity precautions and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
