How common is difficulty swallowing in oesophageal cancer?

The oesophagus is the tube that carries food and drink from the mouth to the stomach. A narrowing or change within it can make swallowing uncomfortable or create a feeling that food pauses on the way down.

Some people first notice difficulty with solid foods and later find liquids harder, while others describe pain on swallowing or frequent regurgitation. These patterns guide assessment but cannot confirm a diagnosis on their own.

Contact a doctor promptly for swallowing difficulty that persists, progresses, or interferes with eating or drinking. Be ready to describe when it began, what textures cause trouble, and whether there is heartburn, pain, voice change, coughing, or weight loss.

A clinician may examine your mouth and throat, review medicines and reflux symptoms, and arrange tests to look at the oesophagus when appropriate.

Seek urgent medical care if food will not pass, you cannot swallow saliva, you have breathing trouble, or you develop severe chest pain. Repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, black stools, or dehydration also need urgent attention.
