How common is diarrhoea in giardiasis?

Giardiasis is an infection caused by a microscopic parasite that can affect the small intestine. It may interfere with digestion and absorption, leading to loose or watery stools, abdominal cramps, bloating, wind, nausea, and tiredness. Some people have symptoms that come and go rather than a single short episode. Stools may look greasy or be difficult to flush, but appearance alone cannot confirm the infection.

A diarrhoeal illness after untreated water, a swimming area, travel, or close contact with an infected person deserves medical consideration. Many other infections and bowel conditions can cause diarrhoea, so a clinician may recommend stool testing rather than relying on symptoms alone.

Replace lost fluid with frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Eat small meals as tolerated and note whether particular foods worsen bloating or loose stools. Wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before handling food; avoid sharing towels during active symptoms. Do not start antiparasitic treatment without medical advice, because the correct medicine depends on the diagnosis and your circumstances.

Arrange medical advice for persistent or recurring diarrhoea, especially after travel or possible unsafe-water exposure. Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, severe pain, blood or black stool, or marked weakness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with reduced immunity can become dehydrated more readily and should be assessed sooner when symptoms are significant.
