How common is coughing up phlegm in pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in part of the lung. Fluid and inflammatory material in the air sacs can trigger a cough and bring up phlegm. Some people also develop fever, chills, chest discomfort when breathing, tiredness, or shortness of breath. The cough may be dry in some cases, so the absence of phlegm does not rule pneumonia in or out.

Contact a clinician if you have a new chesty cough and feel systemically unwell, especially if breathing is more difficult than normal. Rest, take fluids where appropriate, and use medicines only as directed. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, and decide whether tests or treatment are needed. Avoid sharing prescribed medicines or using antibiotics saved from a previous illness.

Get urgent medical help for severe trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, coughing up blood, blue or grey lips or face, fainting, confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with long-term heart, lung, kidney, or immune conditions may need earlier assessment when respiratory symptoms develop.
