How common is cough in COPD?

COPD can cause a persistent cough, with or without phlegm, because the airways are narrowed and inflamed. Breathlessness, wheezing, reduced exercise tolerance, and chest tightness may occur as well. A change in sputum colour, thickness, or amount can signal a flare-up. Not every cough in a person with COPD comes from COPD, so clinicians also consider infection, reflux, medicines, and other lung or heart problems.

Record your usual cough and sputum so a change is easier to recognise. Take prescribed inhalers correctly, attend planned reviews, and ask for a demonstration if the device feels difficult to use. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, keep active within your plan, and learn the personal action plan for flare-ups. Do not change inhalers or start antibiotics or steroids without medical advice.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or inability to speak in full sentences. Contact your clinician promptly when breathing is worse than usual, sputum changes, fever develops, chest pain appears, or rescue treatment is needed more often than your plan allows.
