How common is cough in bronchiectasis?

The cough may be long-lasting and may bring up phlegm. Changes in the amount, colour, smell, or thickness of mucus can accompany a chest infection. Some people also have breathlessness, tiredness, wheezing, or repeated chest infections. A cough alone does not identify bronchiectasis; clinicians consider the full history and may use breathing tests, mucus assessment, or chest imaging when appropriate.

Notice whether your cough is dry or productive and record changes from your usual mucus. Take medicines exactly as prescribed, keep recommended vaccinations up to date, drink fluids unless a clinician has restricted them, and learn airway-clearance exercises from a respiratory professional. Do not start leftover antibiotics for a change in phlegm. A planned review can help adjust treatment and create an action plan for flare-ups.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, or a large or ongoing amount of blood in sputum. Seek prompt medical advice if your cough and phlegm suddenly worsen, you develop fever or chest pain, or your usual treatment is not controlling a flare-up.
