How common is cough in allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis causes inflammation in the lining of the nose after exposure to a trigger such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. A blocked or runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and post-nasal drip may accompany the cough. The cough may be worse at night or after spending time near a trigger.

Cough has other possible causes, including viral illness, asthma, reflux, and medicines. Cough alone cannot show that allergic rhinitis is responsible, particularly when nasal symptoms are absent.

Notice where and when symptoms occur, then reduce exposure to the suspected trigger where practical. Saline nasal rinsing can clear irritants, and a pharmacist can advise about an antihistamine or nasal spray. Use nasal products as directed; technique matters, and some sprays work best when used regularly.

Keep indoor spaces well ventilated and avoid smoke. If symptoms interfere with sleep, work, or exercise, arrange a review so the diagnosis and treatment plan can be checked.

Seek prompt advice for wheezing, chest tightness, breathlessness, facial swelling, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue. A persistent cough, coughing blood, fever, or feeling very unwell may indicate another problem and needs assessment.

Ask whether allergic rhinitis explains both your nasal symptoms and cough, whether asthma should be considered, and which nasal treatment suits you. Mention seasonal patterns, home or workplace exposures, sleep disruption, and any breathing symptoms.
