How common are chills in pneumonia?

Pneumonia causes inflammation in the lungs and may trigger fever and shivering. Cough, faster breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with a deep breath, and unusual tiredness can accompany it. Older adults may show confusion or weakness rather than a typical fever. Chills are not specific to pneumonia, so the full symptom pattern and a chest examination help determine whether a lung infection is likely.

Arrange medical advice when chills occur with a persistent cough, fever, breathlessness, or chest discomfort. A clinician may listen to your lungs and decide whether further testing is needed. Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoking, and take prescribed treatment exactly as directed. Do not use someone else's antibiotics, since pneumonia can have different causes and treatment choices.

Get emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pressure, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or rapidly worsening weakness.
