How common is chest pain in pneumonia?

Pneumonia can inflame the air sacs and the thin lining around the lungs. This may cause a sharp or aching pain on one side of the chest that worsens with a deep breath, cough, or movement. Fever, cough, phlegm, chills, tiredness, and shortness of breath may occur as well. The pattern varies with the affected part of the lung and the cause of the infection. Chest pain has many possible causes, so its presence alone cannot identify pneumonia.

Arrange a medical assessment if chest pain occurs with a new cough, fever, breathing difficulty, or feeling significantly unwell. A clinician may listen to your lungs and decide whether further tests are needed. Rest, fluids, and medicines recommended by a clinician can support recovery, but do not delay assessment when breathing is becoming harder. Note when the pain began, what makes it worse, and any change in your cough or temperature.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening chest pain, marked difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to stay awake. Urgent assessment is also needed if chest pain is heavy or spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, or if it comes with sweating or nausea. These warning signs can indicate a problem that needs immediate treatment, whether or not pneumonia is present.
