How common is chest pain in acid reflux?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus. The resulting irritation can feel like burning, pressure, or discomfort in the centre of the chest and may be accompanied by an acidic taste, burping, or symptoms after eating or when lying down. Chest pain has many possible causes, including heart and lung problems. Its presence does not establish reflux as the cause.

If you have previously been assessed and given a reflux plan, follow it as directed. Keeping a note of meals, posture, symptoms, and medicines can reveal a pattern for discussion with a clinician. Avoid lying flat soon after eating if this tends to trigger symptoms. Seek advice before changing prescribed medicines, especially if pain is new, recurring, or different from your usual reflux discomfort.

Call emergency services for new, severe, crushing, or persistent chest pain, or chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, fainting, dizziness, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, or an irregular heartbeat. Do not try to decide at home whether such symptoms are reflux. Arrange a medical review for trouble swallowing, vomiting, black stools, unexplained weight change, or reflux symptoms that keep returning.
