How common is breakthrough bleeding in endometrial polyps?

An endometrial polyp is a growth from the lining of the uterus. It can make the lining more prone to irregular shedding, causing spotting between periods, bleeding after sex, heavier periods, or bleeding after menopause. Some polyps cause no symptoms.

A clinician may ask about your cycle, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and bleeding pattern. Assessment can include a pelvic examination, pregnancy testing, ultrasound, or a closer view of the uterine cavity. The choice depends on your symptoms and stage of life.

Arrange a gynaecology review for recurring breakthrough bleeding or bleeding that changes your usual pattern. Keep a record of dates, flow, clots, pain, and bleeding after sex. Mention hormonal contraception, blood thinners, and any possibility of pregnancy because each can affect the assessment.

If a polyp is found, your clinician may discuss monitoring or removal. A removed polyp can be sent for laboratory examination. Ask how results will be shared and whether follow-up is needed. Do not assume that bleeding will explain itself if it continues or returns.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that rapidly becomes heavy, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Bleeding after menopause also deserves medical assessment, even when it is light. Emergency symptoms need immediate help rather than a routine appointment.
