How common is blurred vision in hypertension?

High blood pressure can place strain on the small blood vessels supplying the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Changes in these vessels may affect vision, and blurred vision can be a sign that blood pressure needs review. Hypertension can also be present without obvious symptoms, so vision alone cannot show how high the pressure is.

Blurred vision has many other possible explanations, such as dry eye, migraine, a change in glasses prescription, medication effects, or a problem affecting the eye or brain. A blood-pressure reading and an eye assessment help separate these possibilities.

Check your blood pressure using a validated monitor if one is available, sit quietly before measuring, and record the reading with the time and your symptoms. Arrange medical review if blurred vision is new, persistent, or recurring. Continue prescribed blood-pressure medicine as directed and do not change the dose based on one reading without clinical advice.

A clinician may review your readings, medicines, neurological symptoms, and eye health. An eye examination can look for changes at the back of the eye that are not visible in a mirror.

Seek emergency help for sudden vision loss, severe headache, confusion, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, chest pain, shortness of breath, or a seizure. Sudden visual change with a very high blood-pressure reading also needs urgent assessment. Do not drive yourself if your vision or other symptoms are severe.

Ask whether your blood-pressure readings could explain the visual change, whether your medicines need review, and whether you need an eye examination. Confirm how and when to measure at home, what reading or symptom should trigger urgent help, and when follow-up is needed.
