How common is bleeding in early pregnancy in ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. As the pregnancy changes the surrounding tissue, bleeding can occur. Bleeding in early pregnancy also has other possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot tell you where a pregnancy is developing. Assessment commonly involves pregnancy-hormone testing, ultrasound, and repeat checks when needed.

Contact a maternity service, doctor, or emergency department promptly if you are pregnant or might be pregnant and have bleeding. Tell them the first day of your last period, the bleeding pattern, pain location, dizziness, and any previous ectopic pregnancy or fertility treatment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell.

Call emergency services for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, heavy bleeding, or collapse. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding and need immediate assessment. Get urgent advice for any bleeding with pain, even if the bleeding seems minor.

Ask where the pregnancy is located, which tests are needed, when results will be repeated, and what warning symptoms mean you should return immediately. Ask how to contact the maternity team outside normal clinic hours.
