How common is bedwetting in urinary tract infection?

A urinary tract infection can irritate the bladder and create urgency, frequent urination, stinging, or new nighttime wetting. A child who had been dry may start wetting the bed during the illness. Fever, lower tummy discomfort, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and changes in daytime urination can add support to the possibility of infection, although symptoms vary.

Bedwetting also has other explanations, including constipation, deep sleep, stress, changes in routine, diabetes, or bladder development. A urine test is usually needed to distinguish infection from these causes. Do not infer the diagnosis from the wetting pattern alone.

Arrange a clinical assessment if bedwetting is new, repeated, or accompanied by pain when passing urine, urgency, daytime accidents, or fever. A clinician may request a clean urine sample and decide whether treatment is needed. Offer regular fluids and easy toilet access, and avoid blaming or shaming the child. Keep a brief note of fever, pain, wet nights, urine changes, and any constipation.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever with back or side pain, vomiting, unusual sleepiness, shaking chills, or a child who appears seriously unwell. Prompt care is also needed if the child cannot keep fluids down, passes very little urine, or has blood in the urine. These features can indicate a more significant infection or dehydration.

Ask whether a urine test is needed, how the sample should be collected, whether constipation or another bladder problem could contribute, and which changes should prompt a same-day review.
