How common is ankle pain in an ankle fracture?

Short answer
Ankle Pain is a common presentation of Ankle Fracture, especially after a forceful twist, fall, or direct blow.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a fracture may feel
A fracture can irritate tissues around the injured bone, producing pain, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Pain may increase when the ankle is moved or when weight is placed through the foot. The appearance can vary: some fractures cause obvious deformity, while others look like a severe sprain. Pain alone cannot show whether a bone is broken. The injury mechanism, ability to bear weight, examination, and sometimes an X-ray help determine the diagnosis.
What to do after an injury
Stop activities that increase pain and keep weight off the injured ankle if walking is difficult. Support the ankle in a comfortable position and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if it helps swelling. Avoid trying to straighten a visibly deformed ankle or testing it repeatedly. A medical assessment should occur promptly after a significant injury, particularly when walking is not possible or pain is severe.
When urgent care is needed
Seek emergency help for an open wound over the ankle, a visibly displaced joint or bone, numbness, a pale or blue foot, or toes that feel unusually cold. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe swelling, escalating pain, or inability to take a few steps after the injury. These findings can signal a fracture or compromised circulation and should not be managed by waiting at home.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether imaging is needed, whether you may bear weight, how the ankle should be supported, and which symptoms should trigger reassessment. Tell the clinician when the injury happened and how the foot moved at the time.

Questions people ask
Is ankle pain always a fracture?
No. Sprains and other injuries can also cause ankle pain. An examination and, when appropriate, imaging are used to check for a fracture.
Should I walk on a painful ankle after an injury?
If walking is difficult or sharply painful, avoid loading it until a clinician has assessed the injury and advised you.
