How common is abdominal swelling in liver cancer?

Short answer
Abdominal swelling is a common presentation of liver cancer, although swelling can have other causes and does not by itself establish a diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why swelling can happen
Liver cancer may affect blood flow through the liver and contribute to a build-up of fluid in the abdomen, known as ascites. The abdomen may feel full, tight or heavy, and clothes may become uncomfortable. Swelling can also occur with liver disease, heart problems, kidney problems, digestive conditions or other causes.
A clinician may ask when the swelling began, whether it is changing, and whether there is pain, breathlessness, nausea, yellowing of the skin or legs that are also swollen. Examination and tests help identify the cause; the symptom alone cannot distinguish liver cancer from other conditions.
What to do next
Arrange medical assessment for new, persistent or increasing abdominal swelling, particularly if you have known liver disease or other liver symptoms. Note changes in size, discomfort, appetite, weight, urine, bowel movements and breathing, and bring a list of medicines and supplements.
Do not start water tablets, restrict fluids or make major diet changes without advice. If ascites is suspected, the team may discuss tests and treatments based on the cause and your overall health.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe or new abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting or difficulty breathing. Emergency help is needed for severe breathlessness, collapse or sudden confusion. These warning signs can reflect complications that need prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be causing the swelling, whether fluid is present and which tests are needed. Ask how to monitor changes at home, which foods or medicines to avoid, and which symptoms should lead to a same-day call.
Questions people ask
Does abdominal swelling confirm liver cancer?
No. Abdominal swelling has several possible causes. Assessment, examination and appropriate tests are needed to identify the reason.
What is ascites?
Ascites is a build-up of fluid in the abdomen that can cause fullness, tightness or increasing swelling.
