How common is abdominal pain in inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weaker area of the lower abdominal wall near the groin. It may cause an ache, pulling sensation, heaviness, or pain that is more noticeable with coughing, lifting, straining, or prolonged standing. A groin lump may appear and become less obvious when lying down. Abdominal pain without these features can still have many other explanations.

Book a medical assessment for a new groin bulge, recurring groin pain, or discomfort that limits work, exercise, or daily movement. Try to avoid heavy straining until you have been assessed, but do not force or repeatedly press a painful swelling back in. Your clinician can examine the area, discuss whether imaging is needed, and explain observation or repair options that fit your symptoms.

Go for urgent assessment if a groin bulge becomes suddenly painful, firm, tender, discoloured, or cannot be gently reduced when it was previously reducible. Urgent care is also needed for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. These changes can signal a trapped hernia and should not be watched at home.

Ask whether the examination supports an inguinal hernia, which activities need modification, and what symptoms suggest the hernia has become trapped. If repair is discussed, ask about the recovery plan and the effect on work, driving, and exercise.
