Short answer

In children, chickenpox usually causes an itchy rash that changes from spots to fluid-filled blisters and scabs, while the child may also have fever or feel tired.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Rash pattern
New spots and older scabs may appear together.
Spread prevention
Avoid close contact until the contagious period has ended.

How it tends to present

Chickenpox, also called varicella, spreads easily through close contact and respiratory droplets. The rash often appears in crops, so new spots, blisters, and scabs can be present at the same time. It may start on the chest, back, or face and spread to other areas, including the scalp and mouth. Itching is common, but the number of spots and the child’s general symptoms vary. A rash can resemble insect bites or other infections, so a clinician may need to assess it, particularly if the child has not had the illness before or has received vaccination.

Comfort and prevent spread

Keep fingernails short and wash hands after touching the rash. Loose clothing, cool baths, and a clinician-approved soothing treatment may ease itching. Encourage fluids and rest, and use only fever medicine suitable for the child’s age and health; ask a pharmacist or clinician before giving any medicine. Keep the child away from school, childcare, pregnant people, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system until a clinician confirms they are no longer contagious. Do not pop blisters, because broken skin can become infected.

When to seek urgent care

Seek medical help urgently if the child has trouble breathing, severe drowsiness, confusion, repeated vomiting, a stiff neck, difficulty walking, dehydration, or a severe headache. Contact a clinician promptly when skin around a spot becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or produces pus, or when fever returns after the rash has started settling. Get advice early for babies, teenagers, children with weakened immunity, or children taking medicines that affect immune function.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the rash fits chickenpox, how to control itching safely, and when the child may return to school or activities. Check which medicines to avoid, how to protect vulnerable household members, and what changes would suggest a bacterial skin infection. Ask whether close contacts need specific advice.

Questions people ask

Why does the rash look different from one day to the next?

Chickenpox often appears in successive crops, so spots can become blisters and scabs while new lesions are still developing.

Should a child scratch the blisters?

Try to prevent scratching because broken blisters can become infected and may heal with marks.
