Hot Water Burn Scar: Healing and Treatment Options

Hot water can injure several skin layers. As the wound closes, new collagen may create a scar that is darker, lighter, redder, firmer, raised, or depressed than nearby skin. A scar can itch, feel tight, or restrict movement when it crosses a joint. The final appearance changes gradually, and active wound healing is different from established scar management. A clinician assesses depth, location, flexibility, skin strength, and symptoms before suggesting a procedure.

For a fresh burn, cool it with cool running water and remove nearby jewellery or clothing if it is not stuck. Do not use ice, butter, or adhesive dressings directly on the injury, and do not break blisters. Cover the wound as advised and attend medical care for anything more than a minor burn. Once the surface has healed, protect it from sun and moisturise if recommended. Do not massage an open or fragile wound.

Seek urgent care for a large, deep, white, charred, numb, blistering, or very painful burn, or for burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a major joint. During healing, seek review for spreading redness, pus, fever, worsening pain, or reduced movement.
