What should you know about hot pins and needles in hands?

A hand can tingle or burn after a nerve is compressed by posture, leaning on an elbow, or sleeping awkwardly. Repeated symptoms may reflect nerve irritation in the wrist or neck. Peripheral neuropathy can affect sensation in the hands and may be associated with type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, or other conditions. Hypothyroidism is another possible contributor. Anxiety or a panic episode can cause tingling during rapid breathing. These links describe conditions that can present with the symptom; the sensation alone does not diagnose one.

Change position, gently move your fingers and wrists, and remove anything tight around the hand. Protect numb skin from hot surfaces and cuts because reduced sensation can hide injury. Note when symptoms begin, whether they affect one or both hands, and any triggers. Arrange a clinical review if episodes recur, last longer than expected after changing position, disturb sleep, or come with weakness.

Call emergency services for sudden tingling or numbness on one side with facial drooping, arm weakness, speech trouble, confusion, severe dizziness, or a sudden severe headache. These can be signs of stroke or a transient ischaemic attack. Urgent assessment is also appropriate after a serious injury or when the hand becomes pale, blue, very painful, or weak.
