Short answer

Hormonal induction of labour uses medicines to soften the cervix or start contractions when birth is recommended for your health or your baby’s wellbeing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medicines used
Cervical-ripening medicines and oxytocin may be used.
Before induction
A membrane sweep may be discussed as a separate option.
Monitoring
Your contractions and your baby’s wellbeing are checked during care.

How hormonal induction works

A clinician may offer induction when waiting could add concern, such as with pre-eclampsia, or when labour has not started after discussion of your circumstances. A cervical-ripening medicine may prepare the cervix; oxytocin is given through a drip to encourage contractions. Your team will explain the proposed medicine, examination, monitoring and alternatives. A membrane sweep is a separate procedure that may be discussed before formal induction. Induced contractions can feel different from spontaneous labour, and progress is checked regularly.

Preparing for the discussion

Ask why induction is being offered, how ready your cervix is, where monitoring will happen and what happens if the first method does not work. Tell the maternity team about medicines, allergies, previous caesarean birth and any concerns about pain relief or mobility. Follow the instructions about eating, drinking and arrival time. You can ask about a planned caesarean section when induction is unsuitable or does not progress, although the appropriate option depends on your examination and pregnancy history.

When to contact maternity care

Contact your maternity unit urgently if you have heavy vaginal bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or reduced or changed baby movements. During induction, tell staff promptly about severe pain between contractions, a sudden gush of fluid, fever, or feeling unwell. Use the emergency route advised by your maternity team if symptoms are severe or you cannot reach them.

Questions to ask

What is the reason for induction in my pregnancy? Which medicine will you use, and how will you monitor me and my baby? How long might each stage take, and what are the next options if labour does not establish?

Questions people ask

Is hormonal induction the same as a membrane sweep?

No. A membrane sweep is a physical procedure, while induction medicines are used to prepare the cervix or create contractions.

What if induction does not work?

The maternity team reassesses you and discusses further induction, waiting in selected situations, or caesarean section according to your clinical needs.
