What should you know about hookworm folliculitis treatment?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles and may cause small red bumps, pustules, tenderness or itch. A hookworm acquired through contaminated soil or sand can instead cause an itchy, winding or migrating track in the skin. The two problems can look similar, and a rash alone cannot identify its cause.

Tell the clinician about barefoot exposure, travel, animals, timing and whether the mark moves. Also describe any ingrown hairs, pimples, skin bumps or itchy scalp symptoms, because their pattern may point toward a different problem. Do not scratch or try to dig into the skin.

Arrange a medical assessment rather than using leftover antibiotics. Treatment may involve a medicine directed at the confirmed infection; bacterial folliculitis may be managed with topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for skin infection when prescribed. A suspected parasite needs a clinician to choose the appropriate antiparasitic plan and check for complications.

Keep the area clean, avoid shaving over active bumps and wash hands after touching it. Cover irritated skin when outdoors, wear footwear on soil or sand, and do not share towels or razors. Follow the prescribed course and return if the rash continues to spread or fails to settle.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, increasing pain, fever or red streaks. Obtain urgent help if swelling affects the face or eyes, or if you feel very unwell. A persistent moving track, severe itch or a rash after soil exposure deserves assessment even without fever.
