What should you know about homeopathic treatment for bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis is an infection affecting the small airways, most often in babies and young children. The condition commonly presents with cough, fast or laboured breathing, noisy breathing, reduced feeding and sometimes fever. Homeopathic remedies have not been shown to clear the airway infection or improve breathing. Young children can become dehydrated or tired from working hard to breathe, so their breathing and fluid intake matter more than trying an unproven remedy.

Arrange a child health consultation if you are worried about breathing, feeding or alertness. Offer small, frequent feeds if advised, keep the child upright when awake, and clear nasal secretions gently when they interfere with feeding. Give only medicines recommended for the child’s age and situation. Tell the clinician about any homeopathic product, including its ingredients, and do not delay an assessment. A nebuliser may be considered by clinicians in particular circumstances, but it is not automatically needed for bronchiolitis.

Seek emergency help if the child has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pulling, grunting, marked sleepiness, difficulty waking, or cannot feed because of breathlessness. Seek prompt advice if wet nappies become much less frequent, breathing is getting faster, or the child is unusually weak. Do not wait for a homeopathic remedy during a breathing emergency.

Ask how to count breathing, which feeding changes are concerning, how to manage fever safely, and what signs mean the child needs emergency care. Show the clinician every product being considered.
