Paronychia is inflammation or infection beside a fingernail or toenail. The nail fold may become red, swollen, tender, or filled with pus after a small break in the skin, nail biting, manicure work, or irritation from water and chemicals. Causes can include bacteria or yeast, so the right treatment depends on the findings.

Putting an unverified remedy on a damaged nail fold can irritate it and delay care. Do not pierce, squeeze, or cut the swollen area yourself.
