Homeopathic medicine for epistaxis: what to know

Epistaxis usually starts when small blood vessels in the front of the nose are irritated or dry. Nose picking, forceful blowing, a cold, allergic rhinitis, sinus irritation and an injury can contribute. Some people bleed more readily while taking blood-thinning medicine. Repeated episodes, bleeding from both nostrils or bleeding with easy bruising need a clinician's review; the bleed itself does not identify its cause.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for a full ten minutes while breathing through the mouth. Spit out blood rather than swallowing it. Do not tilt the head back, lie flat or repeatedly release the pressure to check. After bleeding stops, avoid nose blowing, picking, strenuous exertion and hot drinks for a while. Do not put an unverified homeopathic product into the nose.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes faintness or breathing difficulty, or continues despite sustained pressure. Arrange medical advice for frequent nosebleeds, bleeding while taking anticoagulants, or episodes accompanied by unusual bruising. A clinician may check the nasal lining, blood pressure, medicines and other bleeding risks.
