Home remedies for sweaty, smelly feet

Short answer
For sweaty, smelly feet, wash and dry carefully, change breathable socks, rotate footwear, and seek care if itching, scaling, cracks, or sores develop.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key habit
- Dry carefully between the toes
- Footwear care
- Rotate shoes and let them dry fully
Why sweat can cause odour
Sweat itself has little smell, but moisture allows skin bacteria and fungi to interact with shed skin and create odour. Persistent wetness can soften the skin between the toes and increase the chance of Athlete's Foot. Sweaty feet may also be part of excessive sweating, particularly when dampness occurs without heat or exercise.
Daily measures
Wash feet daily with mild soap, rinse, and dry between every toe. Change socks when damp and choose breathable materials; let shoes dry fully before wearing them again. Rotate pairs, wash removable insoles according to their care instructions, and avoid sharing towels or footwear. Do not apply fragranced products to cracked skin. If hygiene changes are insufficient, a clinician may recommend prescription antiperspirant; iontophoresis is another option for selected cases of persistent sweating.
When to arrange an examination
Book a medical review for persistent odour with peeling, scaling, burning, itch, blisters, cracks, or a rash between the toes. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, or a wound that is not healing. People with diabetes, reduced foot sensation, or circulation problems should seek advice early when the skin breaks.
Questions for your doctor
Could Athlete's Foot or excessive sweating be contributing to the odour? Which foot product is safe for my skin? Would prescription antiperspirant or iontophoresis suit my symptoms?

Questions people ask
Does foot odour always mean a fungal infection?
No. Moisture, bacteria, footwear, and sweating can all contribute, although itching or scaling may suggest Athlete's Foot.
Can home care stop excessive sweating?
It can reduce dampness and odour, but ongoing heavy sweating may need a clinician’s assessment and treatment options.
