Home remedy for restless legs

Short answer
For restless legs, walk or stretch briefly, massage or warm the legs, keep a regular sleep routine, and arrange assessment if symptoms persist or disrupt sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the sensation
Restless legs can feel like crawling, pulling, tingling or an uncomfortable urge to move, often when sitting or lying down and often worse in the evening. Movement may ease it briefly. It is different from ordinary muscle cramps, although both can disturb sleep. Restless Legs Syndrome may occur on its own or alongside iron deficiency anaemia, peripheral neuropathy or chronic kidney disease.
Home measures
When symptoms begin, try a short walk, gentle calf and thigh stretches, leg massage or a warm bath. Keep a steady sleep and wake time, and use a comfortable, cool bedroom. Moderate daytime activity may help, but strenuous exercise close to bedtime can aggravate symptoms. Reduce caffeine, nicotine and alcohol if they trigger episodes. Review medicines with a clinician rather than stopping them yourself. Do not begin iron supplementation without a blood test and advice, because excess iron can be harmful and the cause of symptoms may be different.
When to seek medical care
Arrange medical assessment when the urge to move is frequent, interferes with sleep, affects work or travel, or is new after starting a medicine. Seek urgent care for one-sided leg swelling with chest pain or breathlessness, sudden weakness, or a cold, pale or blue foot. A clinician may check iron stores, kidney function, nerve symptoms and medicines.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether testing for iron deficiency is appropriate, whether a medicine could be worsening the sensations, and which treatment is safe with your health conditions. Describe when symptoms occur, what relieves them, and how sleep is affected.
