Short answer

Fluids, rest, saline, and soothing measures may reduce a cough and runny nose while the cause settles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the symptoms fit together

A cold can irritate the nose and throat at the same time. Mucus draining backwards may trigger a tickly cough, while airway irritation can make coughing linger after nasal symptoms improve. Allergies may cause a watery runny nose and throat-clearing without fever. Influenza and COVID-19 can also cause cough and nasal symptoms, often alongside fatigue, fever, aches, or a change in smell.

The combination does not identify one diagnosis. Note whether the cough is dry or brings up mucus, whether breathing is comfortable, and whether symptoms follow dust, pets, or seasonal exposure.

Steps at home

Rest, drink regularly, and use saline spray to loosen nasal mucus. A warm drink can soothe the throat; honey may help an adult or a child over one year old, but never give honey to an infant. Keep away from smoke, incense, and strong scents. Gentle nose blowing and handwashing reduce irritation and spread.

Ask a pharmacist before using cough or cold products, particularly for children, pregnancy, asthma, or regular medicines. Check labels to avoid taking the same pain-relieving ingredient in more than one product. Do not use antibiotics unless prescribed for a diagnosed bacterial problem.

When care is needed

Seek urgent help for difficult or rapid breathing, chest pain, blue lips, coughing blood, severe drowsiness, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange an assessment if wheezing is new, fever persists, the cough is worsening, symptoms return strongly after improving, or the illness is not following its expected course. Consider infection guidance when exposure to COVID-19 or influenza is possible.

Questions to bring

Could post-nasal drainage, allergy, asthma, or infection be driving my cough? Which medicine is safe for my age and current treatment? Do I need testing or an examination of my chest?

Yes. Mucus draining towards the throat can irritate it and produce a tickly cough.
