Short answer

For chicken-skin-like underarm bumps, use gentle cleansing and moisturising, reduce friction and shaving irritation, and avoid squeezing or harsh exfoliation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What underarm bumps may be

Rough, small bumps may arise when keratin collects around hair follicles, as in keratosis pilaris. Underarms can also develop folliculitis, in which follicles become inflamed after shaving, friction, sweat, or an irritating product. Itch, tenderness, pus, warmth, or rapidly spreading redness points away from simple rough texture and needs a different assessment.

Calm the area

Wash with a mild fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and apply a plain moisturiser after bathing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and take a break from shaving or waxing if these trigger bumps. When shaving again, use a clean razor, plenty of lubricant, and light strokes in the direction of hair growth. Do not scrub with a rough cloth or use acids, deodorant, or essential oils on irritated skin until it settles.

When to seek care

Arrange an examination for painful or pus-filled bumps, a boil, fever, spreading redness, repeated episodes, or lumps that remain deep under the skin. Get prompt advice if the area becomes very swollen or movement is uncomfortable. A clinician can separate folliculitis from keratosis pilaris, contact irritation, hidradenitis, or another skin problem and tailor treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Do these bumps fit keratosis pilaris, folliculitis, or product irritation? Should I change my shaving routine? Which moisturiser or exfoliating ingredient is suitable? What should I do if the bumps recur?

Questions people ask

Can shaving cause chicken-skin-like underarm bumps?

Yes. Shaving can irritate follicles or cause ingrown hairs, particularly when the skin is dry or the razor is blunt.

Is every bumpy underarm rash keratosis pilaris?

No. Folliculitis, contact dermatitis, and other conditions can look similar, especially when bumps are painful or inflamed.
