Home remedies for underarm odor

Short answer
Gentle washing, thorough drying and clean breathable clothing can reduce underarm odor, but persistent change may need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Keep dry
- Dry underarms thoroughly after washing and exercise.
- Odour versus sweat
- Deodorant masks smell; antiperspirant reduces sweat.
- Avoid
- Acidic or abrasive kitchen remedies on irritated skin.
Why underarms develop odor
Fresh sweat is usually not strongly scented. Odor develops when skin microorganisms break down sweat and other substances on the skin, especially in a warm, enclosed fold. Hair, damp clothing and heavy sweating can hold odor close to the skin. A new or unusually strong smell can also occur with irritation, infection, medication or a broader health change, so context is relevant.
Steps to try at home
Wash the underarms gently, rinse well and dry completely, including after exercise. Change out of damp clothing, choose breathable fabrics, and wash shirts before rewearing them. An over-the-counter antiperspirant works best when applied to dry skin according to its label; deodorant masks odor but does not reduce sweat. Avoid lemon juice, baking soda, alcohol and strong acids because they can irritate or darken the skin. Persistent sweating may respond to prescription antiperspirant or other treatments such as Botox for sweating.
When to seek care
See a clinician if odor persists despite careful hygiene, begins suddenly, comes with a rash, pain, lumps, drainage or fever, or is accompanied by sweating at night or elsewhere. Seek prompt advice for rapidly spreading redness or a tender draining area. A review can distinguish ordinary body odour from a skin condition or excessive sweating.
Questions for your doctor
Is this body odour linked to sweating, irritation or infection? Which antiperspirant is suitable for my skin? Could a prescription antiperspirant help? What options are available if sweating continues despite topical care?
