Short answer
Home care can ease tonsillitis discomfort, but severe symptoms or suspected bacterial infection need medical assessment.

What tonsillitis means
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils at the back of the throat. It can cause a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, swollen glands and sometimes earache. Viruses are a common cause, while bacteria such as those responsible for strep throat can also be involved. A symptom does not by itself show which cause is present; an examination and, when appropriate, a throat test help guide treatment.
What you can do at home
Rest, take frequent sips of water, and choose cool or warm drinks according to what feels soothing. Soft foods can be easier to swallow. Gargling with warm salty water may help older children and adults who can gargle safely without swallowing it. Paracetamol or ibuprofen may reduce pain or fever when suitable for you; follow the package directions and check with a pharmacist if you have a medical condition, take other medicines, are pregnant, or are treating a child. Avoid smoking and smoky rooms. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they do not treat viral illness and the appropriate treatment depends on assessment.
When to seek care
Arrange a GP consultation if throat pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, fever persists, or swallowing remains difficult. Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow fluids or saliva, are drooling, have noisy or difficult breathing, develop marked one-sided throat swelling, or feel seriously unwell. Dehydration signs such as very dark urine, passing urine much less often, dizziness or unusual drowsiness also need prompt attention. A clinician can decide whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be causing the inflammation, whether a throat test is needed, which pain relief is suitable for you, and what changes should prompt urgent review.

Questions people ask

They can soothe symptoms and support hydration, but they do not treat every cause. Bacterial illness may need clinician-directed treatment.
When is tonsillitis urgent?
Urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, drooling, or rapidly increasing one-sided swelling.
