Home remedies for sleeplessness

Short answer
Keep a regular sleep routine, make the bedroom calm and dark, and leave bed briefly if you cannot sleep; persistent sleeplessness deserves assessment.

Why sleep can become difficult
Sleeplessness may mean trouble falling asleep, repeated waking, or waking earlier than planned. Stress, travel across time zones, reflux, pain, medicines, shift work, and an uncomfortable room can disturb sleep. Insomnia, Depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Burnout, Hyperthyroidism, and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea can also present with poor sleep. Daytime fatigue, low mood, loud snoring, or witnessed pauses in breathing are useful clues to share.
Sleep habits worth trying
Wake at a consistent time and get daylight early in the day. Use the bed for sleep rather than work or scrolling, and dim bright screens before bedtime. Keep the room cool, quiet, and dark. Avoid caffeine late in the day, heavy meals close to bedtime, nicotine, and alcohol as sleep aids. If you are awake and frustrated, get up for a quiet activity in low light, then return when sleepy. Keep a short sleep diary to spot patterns.
When to arrange medical advice
Book an assessment if sleeplessness continues, affects concentration or mood, or makes driving and work unsafe. Seek help promptly for thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, or several nights with unusually high energy and little need for sleep. Loud snoring with choking or breathing pauses warrants review for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Do not start sleeping pills or sedating antihistamines without checking suitability.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be disrupting your sleep, whether symptoms fit Insomnia or another condition, how to review medicines, and whether a structured sleep programme could help.
