Home remedies for shortness of breath during pregnancy

Short answer
Rest upright, pace activities, avoid smoke, and discuss any new or worsening breathlessness with your maternity team before taking medicine.

Why breathing can feel different
Pregnancy can change breathing patterns as the growing uterus and hormonal changes affect the chest and airways. Mild breathlessness may appear gradually, especially with activity, but it should not be assumed to be pregnancy-related when it starts suddenly or feels severe. Anaemia, asthma, infection, a heart problem, or a clot can also present with breathlessness. A maternity clinician can assess your history, examination, oxygen level, and other symptoms.
Gentle steps that may help
Pause and sit upright or rest on your side in a comfortable position. Break tasks into smaller parts, move at an easy pace, and avoid heat, smoke, and strong fumes. Keep hydrated if you have not been told to restrict fluids. Do not start herbal products, over-the-counter medicines, or someone else’s inhaler without checking with your pregnancy care team. If you have asthma, follow your written plan and keep prescribed medicines available.
When to get urgent help
Seek emergency help for sudden or severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Wheezing with facial swelling after food, medicine, or a sting may be Anaphylaxis. Contact your maternity team promptly for breathlessness that is worsening, occurs at rest, comes with fever or palpitations, or is accompanied by one-sided leg pain or swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit normal pregnancy changes, whether you need an Anaemia or asthma review, which medicines are suitable for you, and where to seek help outside routine appointments.

Questions people ask
Is breathlessness always normal in pregnancy?
No. Gradual mild symptoms can occur, but sudden, severe, worsening, or resting breathlessness needs clinical assessment.
Can I use my asthma inhaler while pregnant?
Do not stop prescribed asthma treatment without advice. Ask your maternity or respiratory clinician how to follow your plan safely.
