Home remedies for severe dandruff

Dandruff causes flakes from the scalp and may come with itching or irritation. Seborrhoeic dermatitis can produce more persistent inflammation, greasy scale, or redness around the scalp, eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. Scratching can break the skin and make it sore. Flaky scalp can have other explanations too, including psoriasis, irritation from hair products, or infection, so the appearance and distribution matter.

Wash the scalp regularly with a mild cleanser and use fingertips rather than nails. Avoid scratching, very hot water, and heavy fragranced oils that may irritate the skin or make scale harder to remove. A medicated shampoo may help; follow its label for how long it should stay on the scalp and how often to use it. Rinse thoroughly and keep combs, hats, and pillowcases clean. If one product irritates you, stop it and ask a pharmacist or clinician about an alternative. Do not pick at crusts or apply household acids or essential oils to an inflamed scalp.

Arrange a clinical review if the scalp is very red, painful, swollen, crusted, or leaking fluid, or if you notice patchy hair loss. Seek advice when symptoms spread beyond the scalp, disturb sleep, or continue despite correct use of a medicated shampoo. Treatment may involve medicated shampoo therapy or topical antifungal treatment when the pattern fits.
