Home remedies for rhinitis

Short answer
Saline rinsing, trigger avoidance, hydration, and a humidified room may ease rhinitis symptoms, but persistent nasal swelling or shape changes need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Try
- Saline care, trigger reduction, fluids, and clean humidification
- Do not use
- Oils or unapproved household mixtures inside the nose
What rhinitis can involve
Rhinitis is irritation or inflammation inside the nose. It may cause congestion, sneezing, a runny nose, post-nasal drip, or reduced airflow. A blocked or runny nose is not the same as rhinophyma, a condition associated with rosacea in which the outer skin of the nose can become thickened and irregular. Home care may soothe symptoms but cannot establish which problem is present.
Comfort measures to try
Use a sterile saline spray or a properly prepared saline rinse, following the product instructions and cleaning any reusable device. Reduce exposure to smoke, strong fragrances, dust, and known allergens. Drink fluids, rest, and consider a cool-mist humidifier if indoor air feels dry; clean it regularly. Do not put oils or household mixtures inside the nose. If the outer nose is thickened, a dermatologist may discuss CO2 laser resurfacing or electrosurgery after diagnosis.
When to seek medical care
Book a review when symptoms persist, repeatedly disturb sleep, affect breathing, or come with recurrent nosebleeds, facial pain, fever, or one-sided blockage. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, or swelling around the eyes. A clinician can distinguish rhinitis from conditions such as rosacea-related nasal change and choose appropriate treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could allergies, irritation, infection, or rosacea explain my symptoms? Is saline care suitable for me? Do I need examination of the nasal passages or outer nose?

Questions people ask
Can steam cure rhinitis?
Warm moisture may feel comforting, but it does not remove the underlying cause and very hot steam can burn skin or airways.
Can home remedies reduce a thickened nose?
They may ease nasal comfort but do not reliably reverse outer nasal thickening; assessment is needed before procedural treatment.
