Understanding the eye symptoms

A red eye with watering, sticky discharge or irritation can occur with conjunctivitis, but allergy, a foreign body, contact-lens problems or deeper eye inflammation can look similar. Light sensitivity, marked pain or reduced vision are especially important clues. Because eye problems can change quickly, the safest home approach is to protect the eye while arranging advice rather than guessing the cause from appearance alone.

Safe comfort measures

Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh pad, moving from the inner corner outward, then discard the pad. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics or eye drops. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have settled and a clinician has advised you. A cool clean compress may soothe irritation. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s drops; antibiotic treatment is only useful for selected causes.

When to seek care

Arrange a GP consultation if discharge persists, symptoms spread, or the eye is not improving. Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, injury, chemical exposure, a stuck object, or significant swelling. Contact-lens wearers should seek prompt advice for a painful red eye because corneal infection needs timely assessment.
