Home remedies for post-nasal drip

Short answer
For post-nasal drip, drink fluids, use saline nasal care, avoid smoke and personal irritants, and raise your head at night; seek assessment when cough, breathing symptoms or persistent mucus continues.

What post-nasal drip is
Post-nasal drip is mucus moving from the back of the nose into the throat. It can create throat clearing, a tickle, hoarseness, cough or a feeling of mucus stuck in the throat. Allergic rhinitis and a common cold are frequent contributors. Acid reflux can irritate the throat in a similar way, while asthma or other airway conditions may cause cough alongside wheeze, chest tightness or breathlessness.
Comfort measures at home
Sip water regularly and try warm drinks if they soothe the throat. Saline spray or a nasal rinse can help clear and moisten the nose; use only sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water for rinsing, following the product directions. Keep smoke, strong fragrances and dusty air away from the sleeping area. A humidifier may help if the room is dry, but clean it as directed. Raise your head slightly at night, and note whether certain foods, seasons or rooms trigger the mucus.
When to arrange a review
Seek urgent help for significant breathing difficulty, blue lips, coughing blood, severe chest pain or sudden swelling of the face or throat. Arrange a clinical review for a cough that persists, repeated wheeze, fever, foul-smelling mucus, facial pain, or symptoms that interfere with sleep. Assessment may help distinguish allergy, reflux, infection or an airway condition.
Questions to bring
Ask whether your pattern fits allergy, reflux or infection, whether saline or another treatment is suitable, and which symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
