Home remedies for persistent headache

Short answer
Home remedies may ease a persistent headache, but ongoing or changing pain needs medical assessment to identify its cause and guide safe treatment.

What persistent headache can mean
A persistent headache may relate to tension, migraine, dehydration, poor sleep, vision strain, infection or frequent use of pain medicine. In some people it can be a presentation of a brain tumour, brain metastases or glioblastoma, but a headache alone does not establish any of these diagnoses. The pattern matters: note when it began, where it is felt, how it changes, and whether nausea, light sensitivity, weakness, confusion or vision changes occur.
Measures that may help at home
Rest in a quiet, dim room, drink fluids regularly, eat if you have missed meals, and try a cool cloth on the forehead or gentle neck relaxation. Keep caffeine and alcohol modest, and maintain a steady sleep routine. Use only pain medicines suitable for you and follow the label or clinician's instructions; repeated use can itself sustain headaches. A simple diary can help a clinician connect symptoms with sleep, meals, medicines or triggers.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, seizure, fainting, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or a new headache after a head injury. Arrange prompt assessment when pain is new and persistent, progressively worsening, different from your usual pattern, wakes you repeatedly, or occurs with vision or balance changes. People receiving cancer treatment should report a new or changing headache to their oncology team.
Questions for your doctor
What causes should we consider from my headache pattern? Do I need a neurological examination or brain imaging? Which self-care measures and medicines are appropriate with my health conditions? Could any current medicine be contributing, and what warning signs should prompt urgent review?
