Home remedies for perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash that often forms small red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth, nose, or eyes. Burning, tightness, scaling, or sensitivity can accompany the bumps. It can resemble acne, but harsh acne products may make the area more irritated. A flare may be linked with topical corticosteroids, heavy cosmetics, fragranced products, or occlusive creams; the trigger is not always obvious.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Keep the routine simple while the skin is active: pause scrubs, exfoliating acids, essential oils, thick balms, and fragranced products. Avoid applying a topical corticosteroid unless the clinician who prescribed it gives you a tapering plan, because stopping or changing it can require guidance. Do not squeeze the bumps. If symptoms persist, a clinician may consider topical antibiotic therapy or oral medicine after examining the rash.

Arrange a dermatology review if the rash is spreading, recurring, affecting the eyes, or not settling after irritants are removed. Seek prompt care for marked eyelid swelling, eye pain, vision change, fever, rapidly worsening redness, or pus. A clinician can distinguish this rash from pimples and other facial conditions and choose treatment that fits your skin.
