How the structures involved in Paronychia differ from normal

Short answer

Early paronychia may settle with warm soaks and careful drying, but pus, worsening pain or spreading redness needs medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening

Paronychia is inflammation or infection beside the nail. It can follow a torn cuticle, biting, manicure trauma, splinter or frequent wet work. The skin may become red, swollen and tender; an abscess can create a visible pocket of pus. A longer-lasting form may involve yeast or repeated irritation rather than one sudden injury.

Care for an early problem

Soak the affected finger in comfortably warm water, then dry it carefully, including beside the nail. Repeat this gentle routine during the day if it eases discomfort. Keep the finger protected from detergents and prolonged water exposure; use gloves with a dry cotton liner for chores. Do not bite, cut or push back the cuticle, pierce the swelling, or squeeze pus. Keep any small skin tear clean and covered. If symptoms do not begin to settle, a clinician may need to prescribe antibiotics for skin infection or release trapped fluid with abscess drainage.

When to get help

Arrange prompt medical care for a pus-filled swelling, severe throbbing pain, reduced finger movement, red streaks, fever, or redness extending beyond the nail fold. Seek earlier advice if you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced immunity, or repeated episodes. A rapidly worsening fingertip problem should not be managed with home remedies alone.

Questions to bring

Is there an abscess that needs drainage? Is this more consistent with bacteria, yeast or irritation? Should I use a topical or oral medicine? How can I protect the cuticle during work or manicures?

Questions people ask

Can warm water cure paronychia?

It may soothe an early, mild problem, but it will not reliably clear an abscess or a worsening infection.

Should I drain paronychia myself?

No. Piercing or squeezing the nail fold can worsen tissue injury and spread infection.
