Short answer
Move to a cool place, rest, loosen clothing, sip fluids, and cool the skin; seek urgent help if symptoms worsen or do not settle.

What heat exhaustion means
Heat exhaustion happens when heat, sweating and fluid loss overwhelm the body's ability to cool itself. It can cause weakness, dizziness, headache, intense thirst, heavy sweating and dark urine. Dehydration can develop alongside it, especially after exercise or time outdoors.
A person with heat exhaustion should not be left alone. Confusion, collapse, seizures or very hot skin may signal heatstroke rather than uncomplicated heat exhaustion.
Home measures that can help
Stop exertion and rest in shade or an air-conditioned room. Remove extra layers, place cool wet cloths on the neck and skin, and use a fan if available. Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if the person is awake and able to swallow. Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity while recovering.
Do not force drinks into someone who is confused, vomiting repeatedly or unable to swallow. Monitor alertness, breathing and symptoms while arranging help if needed.
When to seek medical care
Get urgent medical help for fainting, confusion, seizure, severe weakness, chest pain, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting or inability to drink. Call emergency services if the person becomes difficult to wake or has signs of heatstroke. Arrange medical advice when symptoms fail to improve after cooling and fluids, or return after recovery.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what caused the episode, how much activity and heat exposure to avoid, whether medicines increase fluid loss, and when it is safe to exercise again. Ask whether ongoing dizziness, excessive sweating or dark urine needs further assessment.
