Short answer

After drinking alcohol, heartburn may settle with water, smaller bland meals, upright posture, and avoiding more alcohol, but chest pressure or severe symptoms need urgent care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why alcohol can trigger burning

Alcohol may irritate the upper digestive tract and can make it easier for stomach contents to move upward into the oesophagus. Large meals, fatty foods, lying down soon after eating, and fizzy or acidic drinks can add to the discomfort. Heartburn is a symptom; recurring episodes can occur with acid reflux, gastritis, or another digestive condition.

What may help now

Stop drinking alcohol and sip water. Choose a small, gentle meal if you are hungry rather than eating a large late meal. Stay upright after eating and loosen tight clothing around your abdomen. Avoid smoking, more alcohol, and foods that you know trigger burning. Do not take medicines while intoxicated unless a pharmacist or clinician has confirmed they are appropriate. Ask a pharmacist about an antacid or other acid reflux medication if symptoms continue, especially if you take regular medicines.

When to seek care

Get emergency help for crushing or spreading chest pain, breathlessness, sweating, fainting, vomiting blood, or black stools. Arrange a medical review if heartburn is frequent, difficult to control, associated with trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or pain that continues after the alcohol has worn off. These features deserve assessment rather than repeated home treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Could alcohol be exposing an underlying reflux or stomach problem? Which medicines are safe with my regular prescriptions? What changes should I make if symptoms recur after small amounts?

Questions people ask

Should I lie down after drinking if I have heartburn?

Remaining upright is generally more comfortable because lying down can allow stomach contents to travel upward. Avoid a late large meal before resting.

Can I take an antacid after alcohol?

A pharmacist can check whether an antacid is suitable with your medicines, health conditions, and the amount you drank. Follow the product directions.
