Home remedies for hair psoriasis

Psoriasis on the scalp can create raised, inflamed patches with dry scale that extends beyond the hairline. It may cause itching, soreness, flaking, or cracking, and scratching can make the skin more irritated. Hair shedding may occur when scale is pulled off or the scalp is scratched; this is different from damage to the hair shaft itself.

Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. A plain moisturising product or mineral oil may soften thick scale before washing; allow it to sit briefly, and remove loosened scale gently with a soft comb. Do not scrape, pick, or use essential oils, undiluted vinegar, harsh exfoliants, or hair dyes on a sore scalp. Keep nails short and pause products that sting. A clinician can recommend a scalp medicine when home measures do not settle the inflammation.

Arrange an assessment if the scalp is painful, bleeding, oozing, crusted, rapidly worsening, or affecting sleep. Seek advice if scale is widespread, reaches the face or ears, or hair shedding continues. A new scalp rash should be checked because eczema, fungal infection, and contact irritation can look similar.
